Opting for a self-drive vehicle rental can provide you with the flexibility and freedom to discover Nepal at your own pace and that too with your favorite vehicle.

To help you get started, we've compiled a list of frequently asked questions about self-drive vehicle rentals in Nepal.

1.      What types of vehicles are available for self-drive rental in Nepal?

At Self Drive Nepal, we offer a wide range of vehicles to suit different needs, including compact cars, SUVs, luxury cars, and even off-road vehicles for more rugged terrains.

2.      What are the requirements for renting a self-drive vehicle in Nepal?

To rent a self-drive vehicle, you must have the following list of documents:

·      Be at least 21 years old.

·     Possess a valid driver’s license (minimum of 3 years old) (an international driving permit is required for foreign nationals).

·     Provide a valid passport (for international customers) or national ID (for Nepali citizens) and witness citizenship copy

·       Full payment in advance

·       Have a valid credit card for security deposit purposes.

·     Access your Master card/ Visa card for security deposit purposes. (9+1) = 10,00,000 Total 2 cheques and duly signed terms as you will return the vehicle as you have taken.

3.      Is an international driving permit (IDP) necessary for foreign tourists?

Yes, it is mandatory, to have an international driving permit for foreign tourists. It helps avoid potential issues with local authorities and can serve as a useful form of identification. If you are an Indian, an Indian driving license is also valid in Nepal to rent a self-drive vehicle.

4.      What is included in the rental cost?

The rental cost typically includes:

·         Basic insurance coverage

·         Unlimited mileage (unless otherwise specified)

·         24/7 roadside assistance

·         24/7 customer care

·         Instant vehicle replacement in case of breakdown

·      Local taxes and fees: Additional services such as GPS navigation, child seats, and extra insurance can be added for an extra fee. 

5.      Can I drive the rental vehicle outside of Nepal?

No, our rental vehicles are strictly for use within Nepal. Crossing international borders with a rental vehicle is prohibited. However, in a few instances, you can get the required documents from the government and drive across the Nepalese border.

6.      What should I do in case of an accident or breakdown?

In case of an accident, contact the local authorities and obtain a police report. Then, notify our 24/7 customer support line immediately. For breakdowns, use the provided roadside assistance number for prompt help. Your vehicle will be replaced instantly.

7.      Are there any restrictions on where I can drive the rental vehicle?

While you can drive on most public roads, some areas may have restrictions due to terrain or local regulations. It is advisable to check with our customer service team if you plan to travel to remote or off-road areas. Also, there are a few places in Nepal such as Upper Mustang where you have to take a vehicle permit beforehand.

8.      How do I make a self-drive booking?

Reservations and bookings can be made online through our website, via phone, through our app, or by visiting our rental offices in person at Trade Tower, Thapathali, Kathmandu. However, you will have to visit

10.  Do you offer delivery and pick-up services?

No, we don’t have delivery and pick-up services as of now. For the vehicle pick-up, a thorough inspection is required. As a result, you’ll have to visit our office physically and get the vehicle picked up.

11.  Is fuel included in the rental cost?

In the case of inside the Kathmandu Valley, the fuel cost is included in the rental cost. However, while renting a vehicle outside the Kathmandu Valley, you will have to bear the fuel costs on your own.

12.  Are there any additional charges I should be aware of?

Additional charges may apply for extra services such as child seats, additional drivers, and extended rental periods. These will be clearly outlined at the time of booking.

13.  Can I extend my rental period?

Yes, extensions are possible based on vehicle availability. Please contact our customer service team as soon as possible to arrange an extension.

14.  What payment methods are accepted?

We accept major credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, American Express), debit cards, payment gateways like eSewa, Khalti, etc, and cash (local currency). A credit card is required for the security deposit.

15.  Is there an agreement or document I need to sign?

Yes, a brief rental agreement must be signed when you pick up the vehicle.

16.  How many people can your cars accommodate?

The seating capacity varies by vehicle type. We recommend checking the specifications for each car on our website when making your selection.

17.  What is the minimum rental period for a car?

The minimum rental period is 3 days.

18. Do you have a car rental with a driver?
